In April, The Soo Theatre Project began its performance season with the fantastic Ben Daniels Band concert playing to a large, enthusiastic crowd as part of the “Raise The Roof” Concert Series. April also had the four phenomenal performances of The Little Mermaid, Jr. with over 70 students participating to full audiences every time.
Now that it’s May, it’s time for the Festival Orchestra Concert on Sunday, May 14 at 4 pm. This very special concert will feature many strings groups at The Soo Theatre Project. Students who have taken a beginning strings class this school year or started private lessons this school year will play. It will be the first time performing for many of them. Also featured will be the STARS Youth Orchestras, New Horizons Adult Orchestras, and the two cello groups, Cantus Celli and Soo Cello Crew.
Come and enjoy a wonderful varied selection of songs such as “My Favorite Things,” “Over the Rainbow,” pieces from “The Chronicles of Narnia,” the theme from “The Phantom of the Opera,” a classical work by Vivaldi titled “Allegro in D,” and the theme from “The Pink Panther.” You may even hear a few Beatles tunes, too!
The concert is co-directed by Dottie Case and Maggie Twining. Admission is by donation. Mark your calendars for Sunday, May 14th at 4pm. Bring your mother or sister, or aunt, or daughter and celebrate Mother’s Day with some great music.
Thursday, May 18 from 4-8, The Soo Theatre Project will host guests during the Downtown Ladies Night Out shopping experience. Stop in STP for some champagne, chocolate, raffle items, and a personal tour of STP. Literally, get behind the scenes with this special, one night only event. In June, the two-for-one barbershop event happens Sunday, June 4. This date will mark the 10th anniversary of the joint show between the Northland Barbershop Chorus and the Lock Cities Chorus of Sweet Adelines International at the historic Soo Theatre in downtown Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The men’s Northland Barbershop Chorus will perform “The Last Voyageur” and the women’s Lock Cities Chorus Sweet Adelines will perform “Our Favorite Things.” This annual event at The Soo Theatre Project is always a favorite and is welcomed back year after year.
“The Last Voyageur” performance, which highlights the end of the fur trade in our area, will include songs and interesting characters as the participants not only sing, but perform for you. Interested in a villain who is so bad you’ll just love him? This is what you’ll find in the Northland Barbershop Chorus’ performance. The “The Last Voyageur” melodrama is rather humorous and quite entertaining and encourages audience participation by booing and hissing the villain!
Lock Cities Chorus was chartered 30 years ago and so to honor the two anniversaries (10th year of the joint show is the other anniversary) the theme for their portion of the show will be “Our Favorite Things.” They will sing a dozen or so of the songs they and their audiences have loved over the decades. A few of these favorites include the Mel Carter classic “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me,” a trio of songs by the inimitable Irving Berlin and the perennial Lock Cities crowd favorite “Ode to Joy.”

June also is a great month for entertainment as The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood will be performed Friday, June 16 at 7 pm, Saturday, June 17 at 7 pm, and Sunday, June 18 at 3 pm. Are you ready to laugh and enjoy this classic story full of twists? Join the men in tights as well as the fun, puns, and quips in this nearly, approximately, and slightly true story.
The month of June begins STP summer camp arts exploration opportunities for the entire summer! The Rockin’ Tale of Snow White is the first one available to elementary, middle, and high school students. It will be performed Friday, June 23 at 7 pm and Saturday, June 24 at 2 pm.

Also in June is the second concert in the “Raise The Roof” Concert Series. The Go Rounds from Kalamazoo will be rocking on STP’s historic stage Thursday, June 29 at 8 pm. “Sip and Support The Heartbeat of Downtown” while you enjoy this talented band.
