Soo Theatre Project presents Fancy That featuring Sara Swain, Lise White, Ellen VanLaar with special guests Judy Hill and Dave Morrison. Come and enjoy an evening of traditional, fun and memorable music for the whole family. Saturday, October 13 at 7:00pm. General admission is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for students, and free to currently enrolled STARS students.

Soo Theatre is gearing up for private lessons and fall classes for youth and adults!  Registration is currently open for private lessons and classes. Private lessons started the week of September 10th and some of the classes also started that same week.  A number of classes will start in October, so be sure to check out our website or call the office fo class specifics. Soo Theatre offers private lessons on piano, voice, violin, viola, cello, bass, clarinet, flute and harp to both children and adults, and also offers a variety of classes in music, theory, theatre, acting, and performance.  

 

FALL CLASSES FOR YOUTH

Beginning Piano Class for 8-10 year olds will meet Mondays from 4:30-5:15pm starting Monday, October 1st.  This is an introductory piano class for those who have never played piano before but are interested in learning.  It is a good introductory course before signing up for private lessons. Students learn basic hand technique and posture, note reading, rhythm, counting, and basic music theory.  Tuition for beginning piano is $75 per semester and runs one semester.

If you have an older beginner that would also like to learn, please call the office and ask to be put on our interest list for older beginners and if we get enough, we will add a section of the class for older beginners.

Art for Elementary Students will be offered Mondays 4:30-6:30pm. These classes will include learning watercolor techniques, figure drawing, collage, ink drawing, and much more. This class is suitable for kindergarten to fourth grade ages. The cost of the class is $95.00 per semester.

Beginning Voice Class will meet on Wednesdays at 3:30-4:00pm and will start October 3rd. This course is for the beginning student who wants to explore the elements of vocal training before starting in a private lesson. This is a small group lesson and will cover the basic elements of vocal production through the practice and study of assigned songs. Tuition is $55/semester if taking lessons at the theatre and $75/semester if not taking lessons at the theatre.

Youth Chorus will meet on Wednesdays at 4:00-4:30pm and will start on October 3rd. We will be exploring a holiday theatrical singing production in this session. One possible title is “Frosty’s First Adventure!” Students will also be preparing to perform at A Laker Christmas and the community Festival of Trees. Tuition is $45.00 per semester.

Acting & Voice for Theatre will meet on Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30pm and will start October 3rd.  This class works on all the important aspects of using your voice for acting and theatrical productions; pronunciation, diction, projection.  Students will be assigned scenes from musical theater to practice and put their skills to work. Build self-confidence while creating a great stage presence.   Tuition is $55/semester if taking lessons at the theatre and $75/semester if not taking lessons at the theatre. This is a 2 semester class.

Dance for Theatre will meet on Wednesdays at 5:30-6:00pm and will start October 3rd.  This class is designed to teach basic stage movement and theatre dance moves that could be used anywhere.  Build confidence while learning basic moves and having fun. Follow up the class by auditioning for the spring musical!  Tuition is $55/semester if taking lessons at the theatre and $75/ semester if not taking lessons at the theatre. This is a 2 semester class.

Vocal Performance Class will meet on Thursdays from 7:00-8:00pm. This class is like a mini master class every week. Improve your singing and performance in a group setting while preparing for recitals and public performance.  This hour is designed for students who already take private lessons to work on previously assigned repertoire from their lesson on this weekly performance class. Tuition is $55 per semester.

STARS Youth Orchestras have 3 levels to choose from.  If your student plays a stringed instrument, there is a place for you in orchestra.  The early level meets Fridays from 5:30-6:30pm and is for students just learning to read music and who have never experienced a group with a conductor.  The intermediate level meets at 4:30pm on Fridays and is for students who read comfortably and have been playing for several years. The advanced group meets at 5:30pm on Fridays and is for students who are shifting comfortably, know when to use vibrato and are comfortable doing so, and who read at a skillful level.  The early and intermediate levels will begin Friday, September 14th. The advanced level will begin on Friday, September 21st.

Soo Cello Crew is for cellists who want to perform together in ensemble, while having fun playing in a group.  Soo Cello Crew meets Fridays from 6:30-7:30pm on Fridays and plays all genres of music from classic to pops to movie themes to ragtime.

 

FALL  CLASSES FOR ADULTS

New Horizons String Orchestra has 3 levels of class for adults. The first level will start in October and is for adults (or high school students) who have never played a stringed instrument before but would like to learn in an encouraging group setting.  It is also the perfect level for someone who played for a year or two when they were young, but then put it down and would like to pick it up again. It is the perfect refresher course for them! Meets Thursdays from 5:45-6:30pm.  Tuition is $125 per semester and the class is 2 semesters long.

New Horizons also has 2 additional levels of strings orchestra for adults.  Level 2 is for those who have been playing for at least a year and are reading somewhat fluently, but still learning technique.  Level 2 will meet on Monday nights from 7:00-8:00pm. It will start October 5th. The advanced level is for adults who have been playing for a number of years and feel pretty comfortable on their instrument.  The advanced group meets Thursdays from 7:30-8:30pm and will start October 5th. Tuition for level 2 and advanced is $75/semester for those taking lessons and $125/semester for those not taking lessons.

Music Theory and Beginning Composition is a class offered for youth (ages 12) through adult.  It introduces the fundamentals of theory that would be important to laying the groundwork either to understand how music is written, or to give you the building blocks to learn the basics of music composition so you can begin writing your own music!  This class will meet Mondays from 5:15-6:00pm and will start Monday, September 10th. Tuition is $75/semester for students taking lessons and $125/semester for students not taking lessons.

Afternoon Yoga with Lee Carlson will be offered Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 12:05-12:55pm. Mondays and Fridays classes will be a gentle flow focusing on body mechanics and alignment. Wednesdays will follow a faster yoga flow, students will feel energized, moving quickly enough for a light cardio workout and slowly enough to focus on therapeutic alignment. Attend one day per week for $95.00 per semester and second day per week for an additional $80.00.    

Figure Drawing for Adults will be offered Mondays 7:00-9:00 with instructor Heather Laurence. Calling all artists who love drawing within a group and love creating art with a live subject. The cost of this class is $95.00 per semester.

 

Hansel & Gretel Fall Youth Musical

Soo Theatre is adding a young adult/youth musical to the fall lineup.  Keep watch here, our website, and our FaceBook page for audition information for Hansel and Gretel to be performed in early January!  Our version of Hansel and Gretel will be adapted from the opera by Engelbert Humperdinck and will be performed in English. We will be looking for a mother, father, witch, dew fairy, sandman, and children’s chorus. The roles of Hansel and Gretel have already been selected.
