The roof projects at Soo Theatre are almost finished! Workers from Great Lakes Roofing are installing new roofing material on the front roof, the part of the building that faces Ashmun Street. Five out of the six roofs on the building needed major repair or replacement. Four of them were finished last year thanks to a capital grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) and the Raise the Roof campaign matching money.
This year’s roof project also includes insulation of two of the roofs and tuck pointing and repair of the deco-style arch above the marquee that has become our signature logo. The funding for this year’s project also comes from MCACA and again requires matching funds. The quiet campaign this year has raised nearly all of the monies needed for the match, thanks to businesses and individuals in the community. Proceeds from The Accidentals concert in July and concerts last fall and winter were designated for the roof as well. About $9,000 is still needed. Please help us Finish the Roofs.
