Tour of Homes: 506 North Ravine St.

Built in 1890, called an American Four Square House, and known as “Dr. Scott’s residence,” the home at 506 North Ravine Street has been nearly completely renovated and deeply loved by the Landis family. A before and after photo book will be available for your perusal.

The Landises’ commitment and attention to detail is obvious to the keen observer of curved ceilings, rounded walls, even decorated door hinges, and the extra wide front paneled door. This home has many unique and period-specific attributes.

The shingled exterior has been painted a light brown from the dark gray. A double two car garage was added to the property as well as an all brick driveway.

Upon entering the front door, notice the framed crest on display in the spacious hallway. During renovations, this crest was found in the second layer of flooring of the hallway. It is still a curiosity as to why the crest was put in the flooring, what the crest means, and what the crest’s material is.

Adjacent to the hallway on the right is an office adorned with original leaded glass, floor to ceiling built-ins, two mounted animal trophies, and dark, rich wood. Before heading to the kitchen, be sure to check the pantry-sized bathroom on the left with the miniature sink. It’s unique for certain!

The kitchen was completely renovated by the Landises after demolishing it to the studs. New appliances, countertops, and cabinetry have created a beautiful kitchen which includes two arched insets and one of the house’s two radiators.

The spacious dining room’s bay window, china built-ins, and flooring are original to the home. The dining room leads into the family room. Notice the stone work behind the TV with the cabinet below – work completed my Rob Landis. This room’s curved ceilings and rounded walls are unique features of the home.

The beautiful spindled staircase has an inviting bench at the landing. When renovating the home, the Landises discovered a door also at the stair’s landing. It is now a wall. One can deduce the door had been used as a servant’s entrance.

The second floor contains five of the seven bedrooms with the remaining two bedrooms in the attic. Notice the details of the bedrooms: elongated windows, built-ins, spaciousness, wainscoting, molding, rounded ceilings, paneled doors, and decorative door hinges. The spacious attic bedrooms serve as play and craft areas.

From the top of the home, travel to the basement stopping to notice the exposed foundation stones at the side door entrance. The Landises discovered the stones when renovating and preserved them so that they are now part of the home’s interior. The spacious finished basement was completed after the homeowners recently sealed the stone basement.

506 North Ravine will soon have new ownership. “We are going to miss this wonderful neighborhood. I look forward to seeing the new owners put their personal touch on this great home,” states homeowner Rob Landis.

Note: There is additional parking in the back alley. Enter through the front door. Caution when using steep attic steps.
