Soo Theatre is proud to announce its 2018 summer season. From a popular 50’s rock-n-roll musical, an enchanted garden in England, to an up and coming band that is quickly becoming a music sensation, the season line up has something for everyone.

The first show after our spring April and May series of recitals and concerts by students and faculty, highlighted in last week’s section, will be June 3rd when Soo Theatre will host the Northland Barbershop Chorus in The Last Voyageur! This show highlights life back in time of the fur trade between folks of the twin Saults. A perfect show to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the Soo! We love having the Northland Barbershop Chorus on our stage. Come enjoy their excellent showmanship and musical precision.

As tradition stands, Soo Theatre will kick off the Music in the Park series on Wednesday, June 13th at the Soo Locks Park. Thwacked” musical theatre camp is set for elementary students to take the lead! This camp is similar to the 2-week camp, but takes place in one week. This camp will focus on music, theatre, and movement, in addition to addressing the basic aspects of putting on a theatrical production. At the end of this camp is a performance of “Thwacked,” a fractured fairy tale about frogs, which will highlight the achievements of the week and the great teamwork that goes into staging a production on Friday, July 20th at 2pm.

Soo Opera’s Vocal Gala highlights students participating in the Vocal and Opera Workshop the week of July 23-27. This will feature pieces they have been intensely working on with professional opera singers through the Vocal Workshop. This vocal workshop is designed for students and adults, from college voice majors, pre-career singers and young singers who are working on technique and artistry. This is a one-week vocal intensive that focuses on vocal technique and performance of songs from musical theatre and opera. The Gala is Friday, July 27 at 7pm.

The Accidentals, named among Yahoo Music’s “Top 10 Bands to Watch in 2017,” are coming back to the Soo on Monday, July 30th!!!! The Accidentals’ adventure began in their hometown of Traverse City, MI, when Larson, a sophomore cellist, and Buist, a junior violinist, were paired for a high school orchestra event. The gifted young musicians became fast friends and before long, bandmates. Having both grown up in musical families with professional pianists for fathers and vocalists for mothers, their shared influences bounced between classical, jazz, bluegrass, country, alt-rock, and the obscure. This is the 3rd time that they have performed in the historic Soo Theatre.

Soo Opera presents “The Secret Garden,” a story about a spoiled orphan girl who is sent to live with her uncle on the Yorkshire moors and discovers a renewed life, for herself and her sickly cousin, in bringing her dead aunt’s secret garden back to life. Tenor, Chris Hollingsworth and soprano Karen Hughes Beacom will lead this cast of many current and former locals including Melanie Case, Gabbie Pepin and more. With a cast including children, Soo Opera will hold auditions in early June for roles to be filled by local talent. Sponsored in part by the Mackinac Arts Council, Soo Opera will perform on August 10 and 12 at Soo Theatre and on August 13 at Mission Point Theatre on Mackinac Island.
