CAMPS

STRINGS CAMP: GAMES & MORE

Monday – Friday, June 8-12, 2026

Designed for strings students in their first 1-3 years, this camp is geared  towards fun, fun, fun!

Games are used to reinforce and help memorize important concepts in the early stages of string growth. Topics covered  include note reading, musical terms & symbols, dynamics, bow holds, steady beat, and rhythm.

BEGINNING VIOLIN CAMP

Monday – Friday, June 8-12, 2026
2:00-4:00pm
Ages 8-13

This camp is designed for students who wants to learn to play violin or viola and have no prior experience!

This intensive camp will have you playing recognizable songs in no time!

Soo Theatre has a limited number of instruments to loan for this camp.  If we do not have the correct instrument or size, the family would secure a rental instrument.

THREE NANNY GOATS GRUFF CAMP

Monday – Friday, June 15 – 19, 2026 – 9:30am-12pm

Annie, Fannie, and Big Bertha Lee are 3 Nanny Goats. Under the bridge lives the terrible troll! Watch out for that mean troll! Will the troll let the goats pass over the bridge? You’ll have to come to camp to find out. Does your student want to be a goat? Or a troll?

This musical theater camp is a great experience for a first-time theater student. Students will learn theater terms while singing great songs and having fun with friends in this classic fairy tale.

Students will perform at the end of the week on the historic Soo Theatre stage!

BEGINNING PIANO CAMP

Monday – Friday, June 15-19, 2026

This beginning piano camp is designed for students who have never played the piano before but want to learn and get a good foundation. Using games and play, students will learn rhythms, note reading, musical terms and symbols, and will leave camp playing a number of songs that will prepare them for future lessons. A great introduction to music and the piano!

PIANO ENSEMBLE CAMP

Monday – Friday, June 15-19, 2026

1:00-4:00pm

Ages 8 & up

This camp is designed for students who already play the piano, read music, and have some background in piano, but are still in their early stages of learning. This camp will use lots of games and other activities to reinforce musical concepts such as rhythm, tempo, note reading, and musical terms and symbols. Students will also learn to play songs in ensemble together and how to listen to other parts while maintaining focus on their own part.

NEURODIVERSE CAMP

Monday – Friday, June 15-19, 2026

This camp is geared towards children with special needs. Campers will have the opportunity to work on communication, attention, and movement skills in the capacity of fun and engaging musical activities run by a board certified music therapist. Lots of singing, dancing, moving, and making new friends!

Parents who enroll students in this camp will receive a follow-up email asking questions that will help us to understand your camper better and what will make this camp more successful for them!

STITCH, SHAPE & SHINE

A Mixed-Media Art Camp

Monday – Friday, June 15-19, 2026 – 10am-3pm 

Elementary

Stitch, Shape & Shine is a five-day mixed media art camp for artists ages 7–12. Campers will explore a variety of hands-on art techniques including paper mâché sculpture, painting, embroidery, clay creations, and jewelry and beading. Each project encourages creativity, problem-solving, and fine motor skill development while allowing students to express their own style. Campers will learn foundational art skills while creating unique, take-home pieces they’ll be proud of. No prior art experience required — just a love for creating!

In this hilarious and imaginative mini-musical, we meet a unique and talented group of animals living on an unusual farm. Between the gourmet goats who refuse to eat garbage, a chorus line of hoofing cows, neatnik pigs, and funky dancing chickens, the musical will be sure to tickle the imagination and funny bone of performers and audiences alike. 

This funny tale, told through story and song, is another great experience for our first time and early theater students!

A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD

ELEMENTARY MUSICAL THEATER CAMP

Based on the beloved children’s books by Arnold Lobel, A Year with Frog and Toad follows the adventures of two friends, Frog and Toad, as they engage in various activities throughout the seasons, including planting gardens, swimming, and learning life lessons. The music is whimsical and fun for our elementary-aged theater stars.

Students who sign up for camp will audition during camp, learn their lines and songs, and be ready to sing, dance, and perform by the end of the week!

Set in a whimsical bookstore named “A Likely Story,” the play follows Margie, the scatterbrained owner who is passionate about reading but struggling to keep her store afloat. Unbeknownst to her, at night, the characters from the books on her shelves come alive. These characters include beloved figures such as Dorothy Gale, Robin Hood, Pollyanna, Sherlock Holmes, Heidi, and Tom Sawyer. They long to assist Margie in saving her store from financial ruin.

This 2-week camp is designed with our older theater students in mind. Students will audition and get a major musical theater production up in just 2 weeks!

Elementary joins the 2nd week.

ELEMENTARY ARTS EXPLORATION CAMP

This camp explores many disciplines with the visual and performing arts.  Students will make arts & crafts, work on a short play, hear a string quartet and participate in an “instrument petting zoo,” not to mention playing boom whackers and drums. Exploration is the key to this camp!

OPERA & MUSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP

Monday – Wednesday, July 13-15, 2026 – 11am-4pm

VOCAL GALA – See below for dates/times

This vocal workshop is designed for students and adults, from college voice majors, pre-career singers and young singers who are working on technique & artistry. This intensive focuses on vocal technique and performance of songs from musical theater and opera. Students will participate in daily masterclasses with professional guest artists visiting for the opera. Sessions will be taught on technique, diction, and performance and will be applicable to singers of all levels. The Vocal Gala will be performed in conjunction with Cendrillon “Cinderella” with performances Friday, July 24 at Cheboygan Opera House and Saturday, July 25 at Soo Theatre.

Students prepare with lessons ahead of this camp for this classic opera, sung by our opera apprentices. Apprentices come from all over the midwest and sing the lead roles in this opera while also preparing understudy parts or smaller roles in our mainstage opera. Open to strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion students. Experience the joy of opera!

CHAMBER MUSIC CAMP

Monday – Friday, July 27 – July 31, 2026

This camp is open to strings, woodwinds, and brass players and will feature guest faculty from the Soo Opera Orchestra. Students learn the fundamentals of playing in small ensembles, are coached by professional musicians, and have opportunity to discuss all things chamber!

Students enrolled in this camp who do an exceptional job may be invited to play in Soo Opera’s Chamber Music Concert on Saturday, August 8th.
