This Friday evening is the annual Soo Theatre Project’s Haunted Theatre! The wait is over and the thrills, screams, and scaring can begin…at 4:30 pm to be exact.
Tickets will be sold from the outside ticket booth beginning 4:30 pm till 7:00 pm during the Downtown Trick-N-Treat event.
BUT, why would an artistic non-profit organization like The Soo Theatre Project create a haunted theatre every year? Is the haunted theatre representative of the art expression STP promotes, teaches, and encourages?
Houghton Mifflin defines art as: “The conscious use of the imagination in the production of objects intended to be contemplated or appreciated as beautiful, as in the arrangement of forms, sounds, or words.”
Oh, there will be objects in the STP Haunted Theatre! Famous characters will hold, use, and be in the presence of objects such as coffins, webs, blood, and bats.
Dictionary.com states that art is, “The quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.”
Certainly, a haunted theatre is more than ordinary significance!
And, Merriam-Webster describes art as, “Something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feeling.”
Creating a haunted house certainly requires imagination. The STP Haunted Theatre was created by the imaginative minds of Kathy Flickinger and Patricia Huebschman and has been continuously created by Kathy ever since Patricia transferred from The Soo area in 2010.

All three definitions mention the word beautiful, so the question emerges: is the STP Haunted Theater beautiful?
The answer depends on your definition of beauty as Shakespeare wrote in Love’s Labours Lost, “Beauty is bought by judgment of the eye.”
David Hume states in Moral and Political, “Beauty in things exists merely in the mind which contemplates them.”
So, it’s through your eyes and your mind that will contemplate the beauty and art of The Soo Theatre Project’s Haunted Theatre this Friday. The only way to know if it’s your definition of beauty and art is to buy a $2 ticket and experience the STP Haunted Theatre yourself!
Two opportunities to be frightened! The STP Haunted Theatre will have an encore performance Friday, October 31!
Did you know?
October is now the National Arts and Humanities Month! Just recently, President Barack Obama focused upon the importance of the arts and humanities as essential to childhood growth and development.
He stated, “The arts and humanities provide important opportunities for our young people to unleash their creativity and reach for new heights.”
In honor of this decree, find opportunity for your child to artistically express him or herself this week. Enroll in an art class, vocal class, or violin lesson at STP. Learn information about upcoming dance classes, performances, camps, and plays.
If our nation’s busy leader makes a special point to focus upon the arts and humanities, can you, too, make a special point to focus upon the arts and humanities for your family?
A consideration well worth the effort because when your child’s academic progress improves, when your child’s self-love increases, and when your child’s overall well being exudes positive energy, you’ll know it was a smart parental decision.
Leave a comment on Soo Theatre Project’s Facebook page about your favorite class, lesson, teacher, or event and you may be quoted in a newspaper article!
