Right before the RiverAire Motel on Riverside Drive as well as a solar lighted post with “3531 Sawruk”, you’ll find a candy-cane-lined driveway headed straight to the St. Mary’s River. Just around the garage’s corner is a fantastic view of the river, the impressive Sawruk two-story home, and several enchanting three-foot elves, eager to greet you. Listen carefully. You are welcomed with holiday music, too! Already, this is a delightful holiday experience.
The theme of family permeates every nook and cranny of this home…literally. Nancy Sawruk’s father left his carpentry touches everywhere: the rebuilt upper part of the 5th-generation pump organ, the cherry paneling, which lines the stairway to the lower level, and the two toy chests as well as the child-sized china cabinet in the “secret” grandchildren’s playing niche downstairs. In addition, Nancy’s brother built the china cabinet in the dining room. And, her two sons and son-in-law raised the roof and remodeled the home from a one-story ranch to its present day structure. The upstairs is formal for adults while the downstairs is informal for the kids – of all ages. Purposely designed in this manner, the lower level provides a child-friendly atmosphere complete with a full kitchen and a fireplace. With the spacious play area, a swing set on the lawn, a dock, and steps leading down to the water, this home truly is a child’s dream!
Another theme of the Sawruk home that a careful observer will notice is all the local artistry throughout the house. There’s a wire spider and web tucked in one corner near the kitchen while a mountain climber by Laurie Swanson hangs from the ceiling near the baby grand piano. The carvings on the 5th-generation pump organ are the handiwork of Len Pianosi. Many pieces of Jeanne Tubman’s paintings can be found scattered throughout the house.
The remodeled home captures as many beautiful views of the St. Mary’s River as possible. Several large windows both upstairs and downstairs, and also in the dining room, allow everyone to enjoy the scenery, no matter where they are or what they are doing. Even cooking in the upstairs kitchen provides a wonderful sight of nature.
In the Sawruk family home, there are many surprises with every turn such as the built-in bookshelves, a deluxe sewing room, and a sauna. It is a delightful home filled to the brim with family, art, and holiday spirit.
