After the STARS Strings Faculty has traversed the EUP and shared our love of stringed instruments with over 2,000 K-6 students, we are thrilled to be partnering with some of the area schools and offering several beginning strings classes suited for 3rd-5th graders. St. Mary’s School, Washington Elementary School, and Soo Township Elementary School all have begun beginning strings classes!
These beginning strings classes pack quite a punch, and here’s why:
- Economical/Affordability: By offering strings in a class setting, we are able to offer a reduced tuition for parents to allow students to try it out before investing in private lessons. Having multiple students in a class allows us to offer strings instruction in an affordable manner while parents see if it’s a good fit for their children.
- Convenience: By partnering with the local schools, we are able to offer a positive, constructive after-school option one day a week for students. This keeps students in a safe environment while doing an activity that promotes physical coordination and brain stimulation in new ways.
- Fun: Simply, music making is fun! The faculty at STARS teaches music in part because we love music, but also because we think it is fun to play music together! One of the best things about offering a class is that students can interact with other students while they learn. They can encourage their friends to join them and create a positive atmosphere for learning together. Supporting others, learning to play stringed instruments, enjoying the learning process with others are all important life-long skills children will take with them to middle school, high school, college, and beyond. We have students at STARS who are in their 70’s. You’re never too old and never to young to have music fun!
- Short-term: We hope that every student who begins the classes will continue love playing stringed instruments. The only way to find these young musicians is to provide them with opportunity. The classes run 10-12 weeks and give students and parents opportunity to try it for a short period to see if it matches their children’s talents. This is a reasonable amount of time to allow the discovery of young musicians in our own backyards!
While these classes have already begun, it is not too late to get into a class now at any of the three schools: St. Mary’s School, Washington Elementary School, and Soo Township Elementary School. There is a strings class in Cedarville in the works to begin after spring break. In the future, we plan to offer more K-2 classes and also a middle school class as well. Contact The Soo Theatre Project office at 906-632-1930 for more information about all these classes. Give your children the gift of musical opportunity today!
Believe it or not, summer is coming! We plan to offer a Beginning Strings Day camp this summer. Watch for forthcoming details. Call now to have your children’s names placed on the summer sign-up list in the STP office.
Reminder: “Beauty and the Beast, Jr.” is April 15-17 on STP’s historic stage. Fifty-three student actresses and actors are performing!
