The Soo Theatre is pleased to announce an exciting lineup of summer camps in the arts for summer 2015. From musical theatre camps to arts exploration, strings, voice, piano and more, there is sure to be something for everyone this summer.
The summer camp season begins in June with the combined STARS Youth Theatre Camp and STARS Kids Theatre Camp in the study and production of “101 Dalmatians.” The two week portion of this camp is for junior high aged students and is run by Karen Hughes Beacom. The kids focus on all aspects of putting on a stage musical while starring as performers in the show. The one week portion of this camp is for elementary aged students and is led by Dottie Case. Beacom and Case combine their two camps for an exciting theatrical production at the end of the two weeks on the Soo Theatre stage. “101 Dalmatians” will play to the public on June 26 and 27.
In July elementary kids will have the chance to to take the stage again in their very own production of “Arf!” This one week camp offering is a big hit as campers put on an entertaining show at the end of the week. “Arf” will be repeated at the PAL Center in Pickford later in the month providing an opportunity a bit closer to home for elementary students in the Pickford/Cedarville/Rudyard/Kinross/DeTour the areas to join in the fun.
Elementary Arts Exploration Camps return once again, led by Ronda McGreevy, which seek to expose students to many different art forms, and culminate in a showcase of their explorations.
Pre-schoolers get into the mix with Pre-School Music, Art and Play Camp, which will run half-days. Artist Randy Krause will inspire these camp kids.
String camps are back! This year, both children and adults will have an opportunity to explore playing stringed instruments in half-day camps. This is a great chance to work with the STARS Strings faculty Maggie Twining, Benjamin Gulder and Dottie Case, to try out the violin, viola, cello or bass, and see how much fun can be had playing with others of like age and level.
The Soo Opera’s annual Vocal Workshop will run from July 20-24. Vocalists participate in daily Master Classes, receive instruction on all performance aspects of singing and will perform in the actual opera. This year the singers will focus on the Italian language in addition to their own personal repertoire and will take part in “Don Giovanni.” The workshop artists perform in their very own Vocal Gala on July 24.
