The Soo Film Festival Presents… The Wizard of Oz … at the Soo Theatre

4Soo Film Festival, Inc., in association with Soo Theatre Project, Inc., is bringing movies downtown. This effort is helped by the tremendous generosity of Carmike Cinemas who have given the theatre a permanent screen and sound equipment that will improve the movie-going experience.

A limited number of films will play this year, with a regular schedule to debut in the spring. Weather is a limiting factor due to Soo Theatre’s need for a more robust heating system. With heat and community support movies will be able to run year-round.

The first film will be the last film to play before Soo Theatre closed in 1998: The Wizard of Oz. October 16 and 17 will see two evening and one matinee showing of the MGM classic. Tickets will be available online or at the theatre on the day of the show.

Show times are Friday, October 16 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, October 17 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person and may be purchased online at soofilmfestival.org, or at the Soo Theatre box office. The box office will be open at 5 p.m. on Friday and at noon and 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Soo Film Festival’s Facebook page and website will have the schedule of upcoming films soon. Suggestions for films to show are welcome at the Festival’s Facebook page.

The 2015 Soo Film Festival was a great success for independent films and filmmakers. One of the official selections, Superior, directed by Edd Benda, is now on a road trip through the U.P. and elsewhere in Michigan, starting in Sault Ste. Marie at Lake Superior State University. Planning is already underway for next year’s festival, which will be held September 16-18, 2016.
