Last weekend The Soo Theatre Project wrapped up a great September with its “top secret” Speakeasy held backstage in their iconic space. With its massive brick walls, a back alley entrance and the curtain in place, the party went down very much like an actual speakeasy. Guests were admitted to the event with a password that gained them access through Oaka Alley. The evening was filled with the jazz stylings of The Errant Late Night Gardeners, the voices of Lola Kennedy and Karen Hughes Beacom and even a surprise dance performance to the current hit titled “Speakeasy” by dancers from Lake Superior State University. The dancers donned flapper costumes of the period and were not the only ones who appeared in costume. Many guests wore “glad rags” and flapper dresses; some of which were made especially for this event. Hosts, Christine and Steve Kois, dressed to the nines and Ray and Joan Bauer (thanks! Soo Brewing and 1668 Winery) were not the only period elements of the evening. A few special automobiles made it out for the big night as well; including a famous 1964 Rolls-Royce owned by Brian Staley of Sault Ste. Marie, LSSU’s famous “La Voce,” a 1973 Rolls Royce previously owned by Frank Sinatra and finally a 1948 MG owned by Pat Egan of Brimley.
The Soo Theatre wishes to thank all who were involved in making this special event happen, as well as all of those who attended! A fun night was had by all.
As it happens with all shows of a theater season, one show comes down and another quickly goes up. Next on deck for fall is the annual Haunted Theatre. Running in tandem with the downtown trick or treat, the Haunted House – Soo Theatre style – will be held on October 30 this year. Spearheaded by Kathy Flickinger, the theme for this year’s spookiness will be “Medieval Mayhem!” Coming off of this summer’s hit musical “Camelot” the medieval theme will carry over into this year’s haunting season. Stay tuned for more details to come! In the meantime, make it a date to come on down this night before Halloween and join the community for all of the festivities happening downtown!
Finally, September came to an end with the first round of auditions being held this past week for the November 14 and 15 Murder Mystery Dinner Theater show “Murder on Flight 906.” This fall’s dinner theater will be presented at the Elks Lodge located at 1111 E. Portage Avenue. Some roles are still available and interested actors should contact 906-632-1930 to see about additional casting. Roles are available in the range from 20’s to late 40’s, early 50’s. Remember, you only have to “look” these ages. Actors true ages are irrelevant! It’s all about what you can carry off on stage. So come on out and give it a try. It’s a nice way to indulge in that acting bug you may have always had. No previous experience is necessary.
Don’t forget! Classes and lessons are in full swing at Soo Theatre! Teachers still have open spaces, so call today to book you lesson or class at STP. Not only are they taking place in Sault Ste. Marie, but a variety of lessons are currently being offered in Cedarville, Pickford and Rudyard. Check out the offerings in your area by calling the theatre today. 906-632-1930.
