SOO Song Writing Contest

SOO Song Writing Contest

Sault Sainte Marie is turning 350!  To help celebrate the heritage and history of the Sault, the Soo Theatre is partnering with Sault Events for a song writing contest.  Get your creative juices flowing and start composing!

Who will write the next Sault Ste. Marie theme song?

Will it be a sentimental ballad or a spirited tale of times gone by?  Songs can be historical, whimsical, nostalgic…past or present. The choice is yours!

The only requirement is that you include the name “Sault Ste. Marie” or “The Soo” in your song!  Songs should be 3-4 minutes in length and lyrics should be clean.

Submit an audio recording of your song to sootheatre@gmail.com or mail/drop off your recording (534 Ashmun Street, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783) no later than Thursday, May 31st.  Please include your $25 entry fee payable to Soo Theatre. Submissions will be processed by our office staff.  Please do not include your names on your actual recording; label it with the title of your song so that judging can remain anonymous.  Finalists will be notified by email during the first week of June and will be invited to perform their selection at the 350th MUSICAL CELEBRATION on Thursday, June 21st at the Soo Theatre.

Make sure you mark your calendar for this event.  You will want to be present to help vote! That’s right; audience members will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite song!  The winners will be announced at the end of the evening.

And there are prizes for the winners!

First Place: $100

Second Place: $70

Third Place: $35

 Summer Camps

It’s hard to believe that summer is just around the corner!  That means Soo Theatre Summer Camps 2018 are gearing up for another great summer.

Our two-week musical theatre camp in June will be Willy Wonka.  The first week (June 18-22) is for Middle and High School students, who play the lead roles.  The second week (June 25-29), they are joined by elementary students. At the end of the two weeks, there are two performances showing all the hard work and accomplishments!

Our second musical theatre camp (July 16-20) will be Thwacked.  This is also a musical theatre camp where elementary students take the lead.  This camp also has a performance at the end of the week.

The Vocal and Opera Workshop will run July 23-27 with the Vocal Gala on Friday, July 27th.   Local artist and instructor Karen Beacom directs this camp with the help of a visiting artist.

There are other camps to choose from as well.  Learn to play the violin or cello this summer. Join the orchestra or chamber music camp.  Elementary Arts Exploration and Pre-School camps will return, as usual. So much to chose from!

Summer Camp Registration opens April 2nd (the summer camp flyer will be on our website on April 2nd).  You will want to register early to get the best rate and to ensure your spot in your camp, as camp space is limited.
