Soo Theatre Announces Winter-Spring Class Schedule

The Soo Theatre has a variety of new classes starting in February and March that you may want to check out. There is something for every age and ability. Generally, our semester classes run from 10-12 weeks and the tuition is kept low so that you can try something new and see if it’s a good fit before private lessons. In addition, group classes are fun, because you are in a class with others of your age and ability and you make new friends and learn something new at the same time! What a great way to experience music, theatre, the arts!

Babies and Toddlers with Parents

Music Together is a class for birth through age five and a parent or caregiver. You will sing, dance, and learn how to connect with your little one through song. Included in the tuition is a CD and music book that you can take with you and play in the car or at home to make music all week long. Connect not only with your little one, but with other families in the same stage. Music Together is an internationally reknown and respected curriculum and a great way to start your music education with your child. Offered on Thursdays from 10:00-10:45am with instructor Sarah Gartshore, to start March 1st.

Ages 5-10

First Steps in Music is also a highly respected curriculum for 5-9 year olds. Taught by Meg Boucher on Saturday mornings from 10:00-10:45am, this is a great way to jump start your Saturday. This class uses singing, dancing, finger-plays, movement, rhythm, and variety to give your youngster a foundation in music. If your child is interested in music, this is a great first class. This class starts Saturday, February 10th and will run 12 weeks.

Also for 8-10 year olds, Soo Theatre is also offering a Beginning Piano Group Class. This class is also taught by Meg Boucher and teaches the fundamentals of music on the piano. Students will learn rhythms, name notes, and learn about how music is set up and structured. If your student has expressed interest in learning piano (or any music), this is a great introduction! The class is on Wednesdays from 4:15-5:00pm and starts February 7th, running 12 weeks.

Ages 8-18

Does your student LOVE to sing? The Vocal Performance Class, taught by Karen Beacom, is offered on Mondays from 4:00-4:45pm and starts Monday, February 5th. This class is geared towards students who are taking private lessons, but other students are welcome to join. All students taking the class should plan to have music prepared and ready to sing each week. This class is set-up like a mini master class. Students will sing in front of their small group and gain insight and feedback from Beacom as to how to improve their performance and stage presence. This is also a great way to practice being in front of an audience. Performing in front of an audience can feel intimidating at first, but with the friendly atmosphere of the class and the tips from Beacom, it can become much more natural and exciting.

Also taught by Beacom is Dance for Theatre, a class geared towards learning basic dance moves that are common in the theatrical world. Gain confidence and have fun as you move and dance and gain skills that will be useful for any audition in the future! A short combo is taught and learned each week. This class starts Monday, February 5th and goes from 4:45-5:25pm.

Acting and Voice for Theatre teaches students all the important aspects of using their voice for a successful stage presence; pronunciation, diction, projection, expression. Beacom assigns scenes from musical theatre to put their new-found skills into practice. Starts Monday, February 5th and goes from 5:30-6:15pm.

After School Beginning Strings

Soo Theatre has been partnering with the EUP School District to bring after-school strings classes into the school once a week at the end of the school day to teach violin or cello to students who wish to learn. Soo Theatre will be holding classes at Washington Elementary, Rudyard Elementary and St. Mary’s School to start mid-February. These classes are geared towards 4th and 5th graders. The Washington and Rudyard classes will be meeting on Tuesdays and the St. Mary’s class will be meeting on Fridays. Instrument rental is the responsibility of each family, but there is rental available locally and it is quite affordable. Simply call the office for more details.

High School

Soo Theatre offers a flute choir for all flautists who would like to play in an ensemble. This class is taught by Meg Boucher and meets on Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30pm. The Flute Choir performs at several venues and concerts each year and plays from all genres of music! They have started rehearsing already this semester, but it is not too late to join!

In addition to the classes listed here, Soo Theatre also has 3 levels of Youth Orchestra, Soo Cello Crew (a youth cello choir) and a music theory class. Soo Theatre also offers classes for adults including 3 levels of Adult Orchestra, Cantus Celli (a cello choir), Flute Choir (high school and adult) and as always, private lessons on many instruments and voice.
