STARS Youth Orchestra & Soo Cello Crew Concert

This Monday, November 12th, 7pm STARS Youth Orchestras and Soo Cello Crew will perform in a family-fun concert at the historic Soo Theatre! Admission is by donation.

STARS Youth Orchestras have 3 levels; early, intermediate, and advanced.  These groups provide strings students an opportunity to play in a stringed orchestra and learn to follow a conductor.  Soo Cello Crew is a group of cello students who play in ensemble together without a conductor. The youth orchestras are directed by Dottie Case and Maggie Twining and Soo Cello Crew is under the direction of Maggie Twining.

The early level orchestra will be presenting “Fire Dragon Mountain” and a piece called “Cellos Ole!”, which features our cello section.  It uses many exciting musical effects such as sliding, pizzicato, and knocking on the side of the cello.

The intermediate level will play “MacPherson’s Lament,” “Waltz from Sleeping Beauty,” and a piece that was arranged by Dr. Barbara Rhyneer from Northern Michigan University called “Slap the Bug Reel and Tim Clancy’s Jig.”  The Intermediate and Advanced Orchestras recently traveled to Marquette to perform this and other selections as guests on NMU’s fall orchestra concert.

The advanced level orchestra will present the classic “Overture from the Royal Fireworks” by Handel as well as “Palladio” by Jenkins and “Embraceable You” by Gershwin.

Come enjoy a night of classic repertoire and fiddle tunes with the STARS Youth Orchestra and Soo Cello Crew.
